LEO Science Seminar: Ensemble of Data Assimilations (EDA) impact studies in support of NOAA’s Next-Generation Microwave Sounding Missions

This seminar will discuss a study assessing the expected forecast impact of future microwave sounding instruments planned under NOAA’s Near Earth Orbit Network (NEON) program. Using the Ensemble of Data Assimilations (EDA) method within the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Integrated Forecasting System, we evaluated two instrument concepts for future operational weather satellites. First, we assessed a potential Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS)-like instrument in the early-morning (17:30 Local Time of Ascending Node, LTAN) orbit to quantify the benefit of complementing the mid-morning and afternoon orbits. Second, we evaluated the Sounder for Microwave-Based Applications (SMBA), which includes new channels near 118 GHz and 229 GHz, in both afternoon (13:30 LTAN) and early-morning configurations.
